collision

Event Time: June 4th, 2022

Description: Collision was our Chapter 3, Season 2 end event. This was another one of our large scale narrative events that concluded a season. Players started off on a moon base inside a giant robots cockpit. They then met a familiar character in Paradigm, launched the mech, and cleared a path through an asteroid belt to the main island. After a classic superhero landing, players continued to push their way through a horde of enemies before finally reaching their end destination: the collider. Players exited the mech after it was damaged, and fought arch enemy Slone while climbing the collider. The event ended with players saving the island and looking forward to Chapter 3, Season 3.

Execution: Collision was an interesting event for us to work on because we actually had more runaway on it than any other event. This allowed us to really get ahead of work in the pre production phase, and that payed off in the long run as we were getting the project to it’s final ship state. Honestly there really weren’t too many challenges with Collision in the dev process, as everyone on the team had a clear vision and understanding of what the event was and how we were going to build it.

Execution of Collision was also pretty painless. We had a very solid launch day and statistically had one of our cleanest launches to date. There wasn’t really any new tech built out for the event itself, but the audio team did put together a whole new audio system called Quartz to play the very chill lo-fi beats at the end of the event. For me personally, Collision was a big deal because it was the last event I worked on in Fortnite before transitioning to a new team within Epic. Ultimately this event proved to be a beautiful “send off” moment for me!
