Operation: Sky Fire

Event Time: September 12th, 2021

Description: Operation: Sky Fire was our end event for Chapter 2, Season 7. It was another narrative driven event that focused heavily on the Alien Invasion theme that Chapter 2, Season 7 had. Players worked in groups to infiltrate an alien spaceship and save the Fortnite island. We were also able to re-unite players with one of their favorite pieces of Fortnite lore, a purple cube named Kevin. Once the event completed, players were brought into immediate downtime for Chapter 2, Season 8.

Execution: As far as events go, Operation: Sky Fire was quite standard. Everything we did in Operation: Sky Fire had previously been done in other events. The biggest challenge we faced with this event was making sure all the new features we had introduced in the past several chapters worked well with our downtime at the end of the event.

Another unique challenge we ran into with Operation: Sky Fire was building it concurrently with Rift Tour. Because Rift Tour was a third party partner event and Operation: Sky Fire was a narrative event, we were able to build and deliver these events at the same time. As I mentioned when I covered Rift Tour I oversaw the creation of that event. Because of this, I handled and was directly responsible for Operation: Sky Fire.

Working on two events at once, even though one of them had a higher labor focus than the other for me personally, was certainly a challenge. This challenge was overcome via simple commitments to scheduling, and organizing all of our info in sequential channels. Operation: Sky Fire was a really valuable event for developing my skills as a QA Analyst because it helped demonstrate that you don’t need to re-invent the wheel or implement any high level tools to create more throughput. Overall we launched Operation: Sky Fire with tremendous success and player sentiment.
